I don't mind paying property taxes as long as I know exactly where my money is going. My county breaks down the tax based on where the money goes, schools, roads, etc. All things that can affect the value of my property, and the quality of life in my neighborhood.

I'm much less adverse to paying property tax than I am Federal Income Tax, where money and time is spent grilling pro baseball players on the use of steroids, taking shots at big oil executives for making record profits while at the same time the government is making record money of the taxes of those profits... Then tack on the lobbyist scandals, politicians taking bribes, and it just makes you want your money back!

It's not that I don't pay my income taxes, I just don't like the way my money is being spent...

Personally, I think it would be better if property taxes were done differently, according to some measure that didn't float with the market (ie, absolute square footage of land&improvements, etc). It makes little sense for the government to get a windfall - or take a bath - from changes in the real-estate market.

Basically, property taxes are the closest thing we have in the US to poll taxes, particularly if you remember that renters pay property taxes as rent passthrough.
