Evil Gift Purchase: Tassimo

By JLP | March 28, 2006

I bought my wife a Tassimo Hot Beverage System last week. Although it isn’t cheap, it is the coolest thing in our kitchen. I just made a latte that is as good as ANY I have ever had at Starbucks. I’m not kidding! Granted, we have only had it a week, so I don’t have anything bad to say about it (so don’t take this post as an endorsement for the product). However, I can tell you that so far my wife is very happy with it.

I got a pretty good deal, too. I picked her’s up at Linens ‘n’ Things for $169.99 along with a bonus of 4 free bags of coffee disks, 1 bag of latte, 1 bag of cappuccino, and I used a 20% off coupon. So, I got everything for around $169 including sales tax.

The main thing is: MY WIFE LOVES IT! Maybe I should do one of those “priceless” commercials.

Props to you, JLP. I bought a Philips Senseo last year (similar in concept to the Tassimo, but a dumbed down version that only makes frothy coffee). I listed it as one of my favorite things on my blog last week :-) http://inchoaterandomabstractions.blogspot.com/2006/03/few-of-my-favorite-things.html

My friend, who works for Kraft, told me about the Tassimo 6 months before it came out, but by that time, I’d already purchased the Senseo.

So… I’m curious how much do you suppose it actually costs to make a latte? Big profit in that business.

In Italy, cafe latte is for children and invalids. If you ask for a ‘latte’ they hand you some milk.

What’s wrong with really nice French press coffee? It’s a glass pot. Boil some water, throw in some grinds, stir, wait, press, pour. It’s easy to clean too.

I guess you bought it for love and not so much the coffee?

    mapgirl,

It makes regular coffee too, but yes, I bought it for my wife. I’m the “coffee drinker” in our house. When I drink coffee, it is normally black. I do have a French press.

Maybe I need to purchase a new French press. Mine is very difficult to clean. The grounds get stuck under the mesh, and you literally have to unscrew the entire press if you want to rinse out all of the grounds.

Am a HUGE fan of my Nespresso espresso maker. We bought the scaled back version, which was still pricey, but it’s so quick and clean and easy. We do our daily coffee just drip in a pot (probably blasphemy for mapgirl), but the Nespresso is AWESOME for a quick fix (when it’s really about the caffiene) or to impress guests after dinner. If you have the storage and/or counter space these gadgets are awesome. Of course, my “environmental” friends say the pods create too much unnecessary packaging waste. :-(

I was looking into the fancy pots but just took my French press out of the cupboard where all the rarely used appliances are stored………..made a great cup of coffee this AM. I think I’ll stick with this and hold onto my $$.

For the record, I drink the FREE coffee at work, no matter how bad it tastes. Once you’ve drank enough boiled deer horns in the form of Chinese Herbal Medicine, you’ll find that you can drink any coffee or liquor no matter how bad it tastes.

I do love a good coffee, but I prefer my caffeine in the form of a nice old-fashioned Coca-Cola. (Yes, warm for breakfast at 10:30am.) But since I give up effervescent drinks for Lent, I’m stuck with the crappy free coffee at the office.

I LOVE my Tassimo. It is the only one that makes my Cappuccino right in the cup. I stopped used my Nespresso for that reason.

[...] Some of you may remember when I bought my wife a Tassimo machine last year. She absolutely loves it and uses it every morning. That was until this weekend. She was cleaning the countertop and while moving the Tassimo, she touched the start button without having a “T-Disc” inserted in the slot. Normally, I wouldn’t think that would be a problem but for some reason the machine went berserk and started hissing and steaming and making all kinds of weird noises. The only way my wife could get it stop was by unplugging it from the wall. That was the last time it did anything. After that it was dead. My wife was sad. [...]

    Yesterday I bought a tassimo-machine, but I haven’t luck. My machine is a monday-machine and directly defect. :-(

Sorry to revive an old post, but I have had my Tassimo for almost a year and a half and still love it.
It’s just so convenient and the cappuccinos are incredible, better than the Starbucks ones.
FYI Braun was making the original Tassimo and the rights have been sold to Bosch. They changed the look of it a bit, it is now much quieter, the price has dropped significantly and it looks even better on the counter where it will live once you start using it.
I have some more information about my experiences with the Tassimo here, http://www.squidoo.com/buy-tassimo, love to hear your thoughts.

    Regards,

    Bill
