All good questions. Being in a serious relationship that is slowly making its way to the aisle I am trying to get these discussions on the table, one by one. My girlfriend doesn't think we should have formal discussions on finances till there is a ring on her finger ;-).

I think she is doing this just because she knows it drives me crazy and I am taking my sweep time on the ring shopping.

Instead I have to uncover bits and pieces as we go along.

Do you come from a culture/family in which relatives expect ongoing financial support and remittances from you (outside of emergencies)?

Do your relatives consider us to be "rich" because we're in the US? And will they expect us to maintain them in a lavish lifestyle because of our "wealth"?

Are any of your relatives likely to expect unlimited support while they "find themselves" or whatever? How willing are you to tell them to - politely - get lost if we can't easily spare the money?

Will your relatives expect to move in with us for extended - and open-ended - periods?

10) Have you been married before? Are you still married?

Very important, and you'd be surprised how many people don't ask that one!

11) Why did you need a cheque endorsed to CASH made out before you'd answer my wedding proposal?

Am I the only one that should have asked that question?
