Financial Abuse of the Elderly
By JLP | April 11, 2006
It makes me sick to have to write about this topic. It is disgusting to think that there are people out there who prey on the elderly and take advantage of them. As this article in the Arizona Republic shows, the problem is getting worse.
Talk to your parents about their finances. I know this can be an awkward conversation but it is a must. Although I haven’t read it, I have heard good things about It Pays to Talk by Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz and Charles Schwab, which might offer pointers on having the “conversation.”
The main thing is to be aware of what’s going on. Communication is the key.

I agree JLP–people preying on the elderly are absolutely HORRIBLE. That is an issue here in Japan also.

I know of one company in my city that although I would not call it preying on the elderly – they definately take advantage of any situation where they suspect the individual may not have a clue. These type of things eventually come back to haunt these companies.
