A Review of Career Intensity by David Lorenzo
By JLP | April 18, 2006
If there is one thing you should take from David Lorenzo’s Career Intensity it’s that IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU! Personally, I think one of the problems with society is that everything is about us. However, when it comes to your career, it truly is all about you. YOU have to take responsibility for YOU. The days of graduating from college, going to work for some big company, and retiring from that company in 30 – 40 years are pretty much over. Different times call for different measures. That’s what Career Intensity
is all about. Consider it a personal guidebook to the “new economy.”
The book opens with a discussion of the different types of employees arranged in something called the Career Intensity Matrix, which looks something like this:
Most people fall into the Workplace Warrior (WW) category. They don’t make a fuss and put in their 40 hours per week. The problem is that most companies don’t value WWs and consider them replaceable. Since the company isn’t looking out for the WWs, they have to look out for themselves. The rest of the book is dedicated to showing individuals how to do just that.
Although every chapter in the book is important, my favorit is Chapter Four: Attack Your Goals. I particularly like his 3-9-27 Pyramid, which states that you should have 3 long-term goals (10 years out, max), 9 intermediate goals that support your long-term goals (3 for each of your long-term goals), and 27 short-term goals that support your intermediate goals. This is useful in that if you follow this approach, you are always working on towards your long-term goals.
The rest of the book is just as useful. I have a feeling that this book is going to be a hit and I suggest that everyone read it, no matter where you are in your career, but especially those who are about to enter the workforce. This book will be in bookstores in May, which is perfect timing considering that college graduations happen in May. If you are looking for the ideal gift for that college grad, Career Intensity would make an excellent gift.
