I Opened An Account With GMAC Bank Today

By JLP | May 1, 2006

After some deliberation, I decided to go with GMAC Bank as the place to hold our cash. It has been a while since I have opened an account and for some reason entering all that private information really bugged me. I mean, do they REALLY need to know my shoe size? I guess I look at it as ONE more place where my sensitive information is stored so that means ONE more place where I’m at risk. Other than that, the process was pretty straight-forward.

One thing I didn’t like is their sign up process for joint accounts. They make you enter all new information for the joint person even if it is your spouse. They even make you fill out a screen name and password for the joint person. I ended up backing out of that part and going with a single registration.

Now we wait… I’ll let you know how the process went.

    JPL,

Thanks for posting. We’ve also shopped around for a high-yield savings account and decided to go with ING. Hope your experience with GMAC is a pleasant one.

With my computer security hat on, I actually like the idea that a joint account requires both people to have a username and password. Maybe I’ve taken the “never EVER share your password” training a little too far, but that puts GMAC on the short list as I shop for a savings account to open with my fiance. I hope the rest of the process goes smoothly for you!

I’ve stuck with ING Direct for several years now … their rates are sometimes the best, certainly not always, but I’ve found I can count on them for consistant good rates and top-notch experience. I also appreciate their privacy policy, where they never ever share any kind of information for marketing purposes. (ie. you don’t have to opt-out)

Anyhow, please let us know how it goes with GMAC.
