How Many Indexes do we Need?
By JLP | May 3, 2006
When I was posting about the AARP’s move into mutual funds this morning, it got me to thinking about all the indexes that are available:
MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International)
Standard & Poors
Russell
Dow Jones
Value Line
Nasdaq
AMEX
Wilshire
I’m sure I’m probably leaving some out. It seems like there is an index for everything. There’s indexes for each sector, indexes based market capitalization, and indexes for companies that begin with the letter “p” (actually I made that last one up). Do we really need all these indexes? I think it just makes things more confusing for everyone.
