More Stuff That Gets On My Nerves

By JLP | May 7, 2006

After I posted about my grocery store experience, I got to thinking about some other things that get on my nerves:

1. Cereal boxes that stay the same size, they just put LESS in them.

2. They do the same thing with cookies and crackers. We bought a box of Kroger Graham Crackers and I swear when I opened the box, it looked like 1/4 of the graham crackers were missing!

3. Baby wipes. We buy these things in bulk. We like the Pampers brand and we normally buy a box of them. I don’t remember the exact count but the box comes with 5 bags of wipes. When you open the box, it looks half full! Why? Why make the box so freakin’ big and then only fill it half full? We all know why. It’s because we THINK we are getting more because the box is so big. There can be no other answer than that. Anyway, every time I open a box of wipes, I just shake my head.

4. Odd prices on sales. For instance, Kroger has been running deals like 3 for $8 on 12 packs of Coke. What the hell is that? They do this on purpose so that we can’t readily figure out how much we are paying. People probably look at me and wonder what the heck I’m doing when I’m standing there trying to do this math in my head. Also, they do this to try to get you to buy 3 items.

5. The price of milk. Nearly TWO years ago, the price of milk jumped a dollar per gallon. There was some lame excuse that dairy cows were being used for beef and that this was a temporary price increase and should settle back down eventually. Guess what? We are still paying over $3 for a gallon of milk! Prices always RISE faster than they FALL.

6. Charities that won’t stop asking for money. All of the other rants were about products. This is about charities. My wife and I give money to a few Christian organizations. In fact, we have signed up and are committed to give a certain amount each month. However, every month they STILL send us letters with requests for MORE money! How much is enough? Oh, and I REALLY hate the phone calls from these charities because they force you to say no. Every cause seems good, I just can’t support them all.

Okay, that’s enough for now. I don’t want to put everyone in a bad mood! I want you to have a good week! I just had to get this stuff off my chest. If there’s something that absolutely gets on your nerves (other than this blog or me), leave a comment.

The supermarket pricetags I see in my supermarkets contain a “per unit price” next to the item price. This makes it really easy to compare prices per volume or per weight between different brands that package their similar products differently.

As far as supermarkets go, I’d add a whole category of lazy people who could probably benefit from walking: 1.) People who leave their carts in the parking lot. 2.) People who park in the fire lanes (do they think they’re VIPs or something?) 3.) People who park in the handicapped spots, or use fake handicap markers, who are not handicapped.

Oh, and let’s add people who park crooked taking up two parking spots so their miata doesn’t get scratched.

I have noticed that several of my local grocery stores have little “per unit price” tags … but then use different units on different brands! Keep your eye out for this.
