Almost Got One of These
By JLP | May 19, 2006
Last week, I wrote about how I wanted a copy of Ibbotson’s Stocks, Bonds, Bill, & Inflation Year Book. Well, I found one on eBay for $75 plus $10 shipping (or a $100 buy-it-now plus $10 shipping). Fortunately, the book isn’t very popular and the seller received no bids. So, I put it on my watch list. Yesterday was the last day and with about four hours to go, I put in a bid of $75. I won the auction, paid for the book, and then a couple hours later I get an email from PayPal saying the deal was cancelled along with this message from the seller:
As I was packaging your item I accidentally spilled coffee on the front cover on the book. The book has water damaged throughout. A full refund has been issued.
So, I’m not getting the book after all. I thought that deal was too good to be true. Of course, me being the skeptic that I am, have the following question:
Did he really spill coffee on the book?

Tell the seller to go buy you a new copy or you’ll bust his key-caps.
At the very least, you should ask for photographic proof of the damage. If the seller doesn’t provide this, report him or her to eBay and save some other poor soul from having the deal with the same problem.
