It isn't art to me and I certainly wouldn't pay $400 for it. But considering what passes for "art" these days, it is pretty innocuous. Check this link out as an example of what I am talking about.

At the Starbucks across from where I work, they are selling a small piece of driftwood that is mounted on a metal rod. The driftwood has been sanded silky smooth and painted with an iridescent paint. It is being called a sculpture and they are asking....$750. Is this art?

If the paintings sell more power to him, as for me I think I can make my own stick sculpture and paint my own numbers.

He's really cranking them out now - really something. I think the fact that it's limited to 1000 is what appeals to people.

It ain't my taste, but it's a brilliant marketing strategy.

And it's at least more tasteful than "art" filmmakers who produce gay porn with a Star Spangled Banner soundtrack and call it "making a profound political statement". This sort of dreck is all the rage at Cannes nowadays.

It's the type of art that makes you question whether it's art or not, I suppose. That's the point of a lot of "modern art." It's where the intellectual exercise is bigger than the object itself.

Most people don't go for it.

Ever since grade school I have asked that question. Needless to say I'm Not a liberal arts major.

I think every other wacko today is trying to pass for an artist. Who can blame them, federal and private money abounds, and this capital seeks such individuals. (Because like any other budget line item, if it isn't spent, next year it will be reduced; but spend it all, and you are guaranteed an increase in funding.)

It's sort of our fledgling national industry which we protect and subsidize, eh?

I don't know if this is art or not, but it's a genius strategy. http://www.copyblogger.com has a couple of great posts about the phenomenon. I find it fascinating.
