Seven Reasons NOT to Retire

By JLP | June 7, 2006

U.S. News and World Report has an interesting article titled Seven Reasons not to Retire. The seven reasons, which are also links to other articles, are:

1. It literally pays to work, and money can buy peace of mind – If times are tight, any additional cash flow can be a great thing. But, can money really buy peace of mind?

2. The economy may face a shortage of qualified workers – This is something Jeremy Siegel talks about a lot in The Future for Investors. There’s gonna be jobs for older workers if they want them.

3. Working can boost your health, keeping you active and sharp – This makes perfect sense to me. As far as the mind goes: use it or lose it.

4. Your marriage may profit from a little less togetherness – I’m sure this is one of the biggest adjustments for retirees. Maybe some “alone time” is a good idea.

5. Without those pesky E-mails, you’d feel a loss of connection – I can understand this. Heck, you spend 30 – 40 years around the same people and then all the sudden you aren’t around them any more. I’m sure retirement drives a lot of people crazy.

6. You can use this time of your life for a whole new beginning – Personally, this is what I think retirement should be all about: finding yourself. For instance, one thing I would like to do during retirement is build furniture. I don’t have the time or space to do it now. So, that is something I would to do once I retire. I would also like to teach classes at the local university.

7. Work may add meaning to your later life – I agree with this one too. Instead of retiring to a rocking chair, go out and DO SOMETHING. MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Besides working, there are tons of volunteer organizations that are in need of volunteers. I’m also certain that your local church could use help.

Good stuff! Check it out.

If #4 is a problem for my wife, I can always go to the pub instead of the office.

Doing something new (whether or not involving work) is a good way to keep yourself healthy – both physically and mentally.

Your marriage may profit from a little less togetherness

I remember when my father retired, my mother (half jokingly) said that she married him for better or for worse, but not for lunch everyday.
