Good News if You’re a Recent Engineering Graduate
By JLP | June 8, 2006
According to this article in the Houston Chronicle, the hot jobs this year are in engineering: chemical, civil and aeronautical. This is great news if you possess a degree for one of those areas.
The article also talked about how H-E-B, a grocery chain in Texas, is hiring college grads to become store managers. I can’t for the life of me understand why a college grad would want to go into the grocery business. I used to work in that business and although I enjoyed it, the hours were horrible. As a store manager, they would be even worse! I did enjoy working with and managing people. I’m sure there’s a huge demand for managers who are leaders. From my experience shopping in grocery stores, the employees are not motivated and the service is HORRIBLE.

This is not just geed news if you possess a degree in these fields, for investers, the fact that the “hottest” jobs in the future will be related to chemical engineering, and hi-tech gives us a bit of a “leg up” as to what will be the big industries of the nex twenty years or so.

Hmmm … sounds like the story is biased towards the Houston market. Most other publications I read do include Chemical engineers, but not Civil or Aeronautical. Medical professions also are topping most lists, along with outsourcing-resistant IT jobs.

Vlad,
Yes, I’m sure it biased to Houston. Most of the chemical engineering jobs are located in Texas and California, I believe.

Vlad, JLP,
The Quebec departement of Emploi et solidérité sociale just published their job’s outlook for jobs between 2006-2009. Chemical and civil engineering are way up with medical staff.
Seems that the whole continent is going in the same direction.

Sam,
Electrical wasn’t listed as one of the “hot” fields. However, this was a Houston Chronicle article and may only reflect local job demand.
