Not Much You Can do When the Server Goes Down

By JLP | June 9, 2006

As a blogger, I expect my blog to be accessible 100% of the time. I know that’s not reality and that’s why I think it is good for me to get knocked back down to earth from time-to-time. One of those experiences happened this morning:

Today's Traffic

When my blog goes down I freak out because in the back of my mind I’m thinking it is due to something I have done. And, since I’m not a programmer, I worry that it will be some kind of problem that will take days to fix. So, in a way I’m glad that is usually a problem with Dreamhost even though I harrass them a lot.

I need to quit worrying about things that are out of my control.

Unfortunately, outages are a reality even with mission critical applications. Just ask the users of salesforce.com. Being down all day means your entire sales force–sometimes numbering in the hundreds–is unproductive for an entire day. That is unacceptable, and yet it happens.

But as users/customers, we still retain the right to 100% reliability, so it isn’t an excuse. There are ways to create faliover systems, backed up by a second level, backed up by a third level, and so forth….

    Regards,
    Vlad

Bummer. I haven’t had any server or downtime issues with Dreamhost (ever). Knock on wood.

Sorry to hear about your problems. Lately, over at Blogger, you never know if you will be able to log on. I was actually thinking of looking over at Dreamhost to host my blog but it seems like a few of you have been having problems with it. Hopefully everything is resolved for you soon.

Yeah, outages are just a part of life. I had my blog go down for an hour or so for mySQL problems (blueprint isn’t on dreamhost but a bunch of my other blogs are), as long as the response is swift then you should be okay.

FiveCentNickle: I can’t believe you’ve never had ANY problems with them! My e-mail/website goes down at least twice a week. I figure it’s something I can live with for 9.99 a year. When it comes time to renew, though, I’ll probably be looking elsewhere.

Well, I’ve never had any problems that I’ve noticed. My e-mail always seems to get through, and my site has never failed to load when I’ve checked it. The only downtime that I’ve had has been self-induced (due to code bugs, etc.).
