What Does the UAW President Mean?
By JLP | June 13, 2006
Here’s a quote by UAW President, Ron Gettelfiner, in an article in today’s Wall Street Journal:
Is he talking about bad policies coming from the Bush administration? It wouldn’t surprise me at all if that is what he is talking about. It seems like UAW doesn’t want to accept any responsibility whatsoever for the predicament that automakers are facing, of which high costs associated with benefits have been a huge factor. It is sad that instead of trying to work on a solution to the problem, the UAW wants to change policies. Makes no sense to me.

Oh, it makes sense. What he means is that,
1) The Prez should nationalize our health care system, so he (UAW) wouldn’t have to fight this one over with the big three
2) The Prez should provide loan guarantees and other bailouts, rebates, and incentives to the said three
3) The Prez should tell his oil buddies to lower the price of gas just a notch, so that we can keep buying our beloved–and profitable–gas guzzlers
3) The Prez should tell us to buy Pontiac or Mercury “dead or alive” else be faced with phone wiretaps and trips to Resort Gitmo. And he should smirk and say “bring it on” when he issues the Executive Order.
That oughtta do it, folks. I think old Ronny would be happy with that. That’s not to say that it would be enough to switch party allegiances, however. That would be like trying to leave the mob; you end up like poor Jimmy Hoffa.

Yep, don’t get mad, get Vlad.

Vlad, you forgot one.
4) the Prez should abolish “right to work” laws in some of the states, so that the foreign car manufacturers in those states can enjoy the same advantages of having UAW employees that the Big Three have.

Sam, thanks for pointing out such a glaring omission. That may be the best way to keep those pesky Japanese competitors at bay.

JLP Asks: What Does the UAW President Mean?
A good question by JLP on his AllFinancialMatters blog, with a couple of my own answers. Hint: It’s about unions and partisan politics. It’s fun to observe these things, so long as one doesn’t get too carried away with them.
