Adding a Comment-Preview Feature

By JLP | July 6, 2006

Whenever I try to get all fancy and add a neat feature to this blog, I find out JUST HOW FREAKIN’ LITTLE I KNOW ABOUT PROGRAMMING!

I hate it!

I just tried to install a comment-preview feature (at the REPEATED requests of my little sister, Single Mom! LOL!). I downloaded the plugin, uploaded the plugin to my FTP server, activated the plugin, and then immediately found out that I don’t know where to add the extra bit of code because the plugin DOES NOT WORK with my template.

All this reminds me of another little feature that I want to add to AllFinancialMatters that allows readers to post articles to del.icio.us, digg, and other websites like them. This feature is installed via a plugin. The instructions tell me to add some code before another piece of code in my template. The problem is that the code they tell me should be in my template is not there, which is kind of like looking at a map that tells you to take a road that doesn’t exist.

Anyway, I have A LOT to learn about all this stuff.

I’ve been wanting to add comment preview too, but the plugin didn’t work well with my blog’s layout either, so I decided to postpone it.

As far as adding digg, etc. are concerned, I used Feedburner to add these to my blog. To do that, go to Feedburner, then Optimize, then click on FeedFlare on the left-hand sidebar. You can choose what things to add to your feed as well as your blog entries by checking the boxes next to them.

To add some of the ones not in the default list, you need to do a little more work: click on “101 Flares…” and then find the ones you like. Go to the XML page of whichever you’ve chosen, copy the URL from the address bar, and put it in the FeedFlare box next to “Add New Flare”.

Click on the “Add New Flare” button once you’re done, then “Save” or “Activate”, then get the HTML code, which you can put anywhere in your blog’s page.

Hmm. Long instructions didn’t make it sound so easy. Oh well.

    Sorry for your troubles. ;-(

And extra sorry for being such a pest. ;-)

That second smilie was supposed to be a sad face (ha!). I would have caught the mistake if there was a ‘preview’ button. LOL

I’ve been teaching myself html code as well. It is a slow and painful process. I share your frustration. The real question here would be whether to do-it-yourself or pay a professional. I think your site is excellent, clear, crisp and organized. Not having a comment preview is not the worst thing in the world.

Is social media going to kill SEO?
