JLP’s Question of the Day
By JLP | July 7, 2006
Here’s today’s Question of the Day:
I subscribe to A LOT of magazines, most of which are free. Still, my wife and I spend around $150 per year on magazines. We almost NEVER buy a magazine off the newstand. What about you?

I’ve probably spent about $100 bucks this last year on beading magazines.

I haven’t spent any. I like receiving subscriptions as gifts because I do enjoy them, but I have a hard time wanting to spend the $$ on them.

Last year, $234.16, $154.04 of which was for daily delivery of the Chicago Tribune. Majority of the balance was for my eldest’s Car and Driver, Popular Science, etc. P.S. By cutting/using the coupons from the Sunday papers, the Trib “netted” us $400 in 2005!
In 2006, I dropped Monday/Tuesday delivery (found I never got around to reading them…) and will spend around $80 for the Trib. Coupons savings to date: just under $400, so are netting $320 as of 7/7. Other magazines in 2006 have run about $30. Thought I’d use the library to get my beloved Money magazine…that worked for 4 months and felt I had to have my own copies again! The $9.95 was worth it to me, just feel guilty about the tree loss…
I occasionally use airline points for some magazines.

Probably about $60… although I’ve been spending less now that I’ve been subscribing through those discount magazine websites. There’s many more I’d love to subscribe to, but I haven’t found a good deal for those yet. I buy an impulse magazine at the supermarket maybe 2-3 times a year.

I spent $0 but I have about 6 free subscriptions.

Well, last year I was a bride-to-be, so I probably spent about $30 on bridal magazines. I also buy a few Martha Stewart Livings every once in a while when I’m bored, so my guess is $45 over the course of the year?
Right now we have 2 complimentary magazine subscriptions. In general I don’t like magazine subs cause we just end up with more clutter around the house.

For a $35 a year subscription to Salon.com’s premium membership, I get a free subscription to Wired, Rolling Stone, and the New York Review of Books. And, sometimes, I even get around to reading them…

About $150 per year, mostly for _The Economist_. It’s expensive, but so much better than most news and business magazines that it’s worth it. I also subscribe to the WSJ online edition for daily news.

We only subscribe to two magazines, but the price/mag is ridiculously high. The Economist, and Classic Cars (UK import), for my hubby, which is still much cheaper than buying off the newsstand. After exchange rates, that totals somewhere north of $160 for the two. I just started receiving a year of Barron’s for free after signing up for their e*trade customer promotion. That was a nice find from Fatwallet; else we’d really be averaging above $100 per subscription!!

$35 total for Readymade and Oxygen. And I get about eight or nine others for free.

I am uncertain, but it isn’t much. Probably around $25 annually and that is from a high school club fundraiser.

i don’t spend any money because you can get some of them for free from internet.

I spend $0. My wife spends about $15 a year. I do my reading online or get magazines at the library, and I’m trying to convince my wife to get a subscription, rather than paying full price.

I spend about $70.00 a year on fishing and hunting magazine.

Probably about $150. I never used to subscribe to magazines, but the newsstand prices are so expensive! I always seemed to spend $15 – $20 on magazines when I’d take a trip anywhere, but now I have a stash of unread magazines I can pack instead.
I’m not sure if I come out ahead or not, and on the downside I always feel guilty if I don’t read every magazine that arrives…

I spend less than $50 per year on subscribtions. One of the magazines is black enterprise, so I look at it as in investment in myself.
