Negotiating 101 – 25 Tips From Harvey Mackay

By JLP | July 9, 2006

Ya gotta love Harvey Mackay. For those of you who do not know, Mr. Mackay is the author of quite a few best selling books. My personal favorite is Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty: The Only Networking Book You’ll Ever Need. Anyway, I found an article by Mr. Mackay offering up 25 Negotiating Tips from his 40 years in business. I like number 2:

If you can’t say yes, it’s no. Don’t sugarcoat it. Don’t talk yourself into yes just to seem like a nice person. No one ever went broke because he or she said “no” too often.

The article is worth your time. Also, be sure to check out HarveyMackay.com

Nice list. As I’ve mentioned repeatedly, if you want more information on negotioating, the best book out there is Roger Dawson’s Secrets of Power Negotiating. It’s not only chocl full of great advice, but also a very fun read.

I have all my grad students read it before they go on the job market.
