JLP’s Question of the Day

By JLP | July 10, 2006

Here’s a good question of the day:

What is ONE thing you have purchased, either impulsively or not, that you wished you wouldn’t have purchased?
Did the purchase go against your better judgment but you went ahead anyway?

I remember once we bought a 1995 Ford Contour that we shouldn’t have bought. It wasn’t the price that was the problem. It was the way we were treated that made it a dumb purchase. The salesman took advantage of us and I should have been willing to walk away from the deal but I let my desire for a shiny new car cloud my judgement. I would have bought the car again but just not from that dealer. What about you?

I don’t know if this counts or not, but when we first moved last year, we were so overwhelmed with doing everything for the apartment that we rarely felt like cooking, and went out for dinner probably every other night for a month. I think we had already spent so much money on apartment costs that I had sort of stopped caring. Which is bad.

I probably also would not have bought the $85 Cirque du Soleil tickets last summer. It was an interesting show but I don’t know that it was worth nigh $200 after fees for the two of us to go see.

I almost bought a new car last year. I was having alot of problems with mine and got to the point where I had done research on decided on a couple of cars, looked at different ones in the area and compared prices, etc. Luckily I came to my senses and realized that my car had never caused me problems until recently and that I could still get a few more years out of it. If I hadn’t changed my mind like that it definetly would have been in the category of purchases that I regret.

As far as actual purchases, I’d say buying a very expensive, top caliber laptop last year. I regretted spending so much money on it and later sold it to buy a much cheaper one that does the job just fine.

I paid way too much for a satellite dish system (with an accompanying 8′ dish) when I was vaguely aware of technology coming in the form of today’s 12 inch dishes. It took me just over two years to pay it off @ a fairly poor interest rate.

Since then, I have had two systems. Each were free for set-up with a paid year subscription for service.

I hated local cable and that was my only reason for going the satellite route.

Later, between the expensive system and the smaller dish, I was without TV for over two years (excluding the one local channel I could receive clearly via an antenna).

Oh, I have 2 of them… I traded in my sporty Subaru GT wagon with 90k for a Toyota Highlander. Even though I did a lot of research, I paid too much for the Highlander. I should have slept on it. But I was worried that the Subaru wasn’t safe enough, that the miles were too high and even though it was almost paid for, I wanted something new. It isn’t that I don’t like the T.H., but I have had it for 4 years and already have 100k on it, and now owe more than I can sell it for. Dumb.

The other is my satelite internet. It took me a year to pay for the stupid hardware, and it isn’t even that fast. I live in a very rural area though, so I felt I didn’t have a choice.

But I made up for it by purchasing a new home on 5 acres for $70k under appraised value. If we hadn’t bought 3 years ago, there isn’t any way we could afford to now, with the appreciation we had in our area last summer.

My stupid expenditure is really something my dear husband bought. Christmas of 2003 he thought I NEEDED a $400 Sony flat panel screen for my old desktop computer (which has since gone to computer heaven.)

At first I protested that I didn’t want or need it, but he emphasized how much easier on my eyes it would be, how cool it looked, etc. Yes, I did enjoy using it for all of 4 months. My tantrum-prone middle child took the mouse and threw it at the screen, obviously cracking it. Goodbye to that nice plasma flat screen!

I’m still plotting my revenge against the little darling… And yes, proof again that no good deed goes unpunished.

    LOL @ Stacey

I don’t have many regrets on purchases I did make. However, I do regret NOT purchasing many things. For example: extended car warranty, my home 3 years ago, ceiling fan prewiring in every bedroom, those shoes I saw marked down 65% last week, etc.
