Car Update
By JLP | July 25, 2006
Well, for an additional $90 I found out that the mechanic who “fixed” our Rendezvous while we were on vacation didn’t have one of the spark plugs fully installed. The car ran fine until the plug worked itself loose. The dealership also told me that the mechanic used cheaper plug and wires so I might need to change them again in the future. Oh well, for now the car is fixed and running fine.

The car industry (new sales, used sales, repairs, body work) is still one of the greatest rackets out there…
Wife’s car brakes needed replacing, and the dealer wanted $1200 (it’s a BMW). The local shop–which I trust, as mechanics go–wanted $800.
A guy that works at the dealership (found him through a friend) did the job for $200–labor and parts included. WOW!

My fiance was a mechanic for a GM dealer for 15 years (until recently being laid off). I know a lot of people don’t like going to dealers because they tend to be a little more expensive, but in the long run it ends up costing you less because these mechanics are highly trained and specialize in the model of car you own. He now works at an independant shop that replaces parts with cheap parts and cars come back because they don’t run correctly due to the cheap after-market parts. You know the old saying: you get what you pay for.

I lease both my cars, so they tend to be under warranty the entire length of lease…..I do all routine maintenance at the dealership….it just gives me extra peace of mind
