Labeling Stuff

By JLP | August 9, 2006

I told you in my last post that I bought a Brother P-Touch (Model PT-1950) label maker. After using it for a couple of hours this evening I have decided that I am hooked. A nicely-printed label looks so much better than handwritten labels. And, I noticed that my files are a lot easier to read. My wife was impressed!

My only complaint about this label maker is that it seems to waste too much tape when printing a label. I went in and changed the settings so that there are no margins. However, when I print a label I still get 3/4 of an inch of blank tape before the label prints, which I then have to cut off. And those cartridges aren’t cheap either. Oh well, I’m sure after I get through my initial labeling phase I won’t be using the labeler that much.

Do any of you use a labeler?

I love labeling things (not people) and have been known to even label my pens after office and classmates kept walking off with my pens.

I have a Dymo LetraTag and Label Buddy. Both have generous side margins, but luckily for me, I find the label refills I need clearanced at Target. Keep your eyes peeled there or at the office stores.

I loved to play with label makers when I was a kid, and stick labels on everything, but I don’t see it as a necessary expense these days.

With two children ages 3 and 6, a label maker has become an integral part of our daily lives. Everything they take to school, ball practice, etc requires a label of some sort. I use a Dymo as well. It’s a nice little hand held unit and you can save frequently printed labels such as kid’s names, etc.

I bought a labeller when we built our house; I wired the low-voltage AV (video, telephone, ethernet, and speakers) myself, and keeping track of hundreds of cables was a pretty significant chore. The labeller was invaluable for that.

However, in the 8 years since, I’ve used it maybe 5 or 6 times. The labels are nice, but the inconvenience of finding the labeller, replacing the batteries which have inevitably died, printing the label, and then trying to get that paper off the back is rarely worth the hassle.

I got my money’s worth out of it, though, and it’s still handy when I really need it.

I love my label maker!! I had one in college and we labeled everything. The wall, the TV, the guinea pig cage.. unfortunately I dropped it and it broke. But I bought another one recently when I inherited some new job duties which came with a bunch of binders. One coworker said, well, you know that this binder belongs to this study because this is written on it, etc etc, and I said, why not just put all of the information you need there, instead of having to remember what goes with what? So I got one and labeled them and now I feel much better.
