Our Values and Our Money

By JLP | August 9, 2006

I told you yesterday that I was rereading Brian Tracy’s book Goals! The chapter on values is one of my favorites.

Why are our personal values so important? Because…

You are the very happiest when what you are doing on the outside is congruent with your values on the inside.

Our values make up the core of our personality. Think of your personality as it is drawn out in this graphic:

The 5 Levels of Personality by Brian Tracy

Notice that our values are at the center. Each successive ring builds upon the previous ring. In other words, our values determine our beliefs, which determine our expectations, which determine our attitude, which determine our actions. It really makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

The chapter ends with a challenge for readers to contemplate their values in the following areas of life:

Career

Family

Money & Financial Success

Health

How does this relate to personal finance? Think about credit card debt. Most people value freedom. However, how “free” do you feel when you owe money to a credit card company? When we take on unnecessary debt, we lose a certain amount of our freedom because we obligate a piece of our future earnings to paying off that debt.

Perhaps we should all write down our values on a little card and carry it in our wallets so that we can look at it the next time we are about to use a credit card for a purchase. Hey, that’s a GREAT IDEA!

Sounds like an interesting book. I might have to make another trip to the library this week.

Have you looked at any of the Franklin Planner books? Tracy is quite similar – Hyrum W. Smith spends alot of time orienting actions toward values. His book is the 10 Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management.

When I used the Franklin planner approach (paper then later software), I felt amazing satisfied and effective.
