The 2007 Toyota Tundra – UGLY!

By JLP | August 9, 2006

Unlike magazines like Car & Driver, Motor Trend, and Road & Track, I tell it like it is (at least in my opinion). Growing up, it always seemed like those magazines talked about how great a car was no matter HOW UGLY it really was. You don’t have to worry about that here on AllFinancialMatters.

Anyway, I just caught a glimpse of the 2007 Toyota Tundra and folks it ain’t pretty. See for yourself:

Apparantly cars who divides people’s opinion and/or cause reactions is a good thing from the manufacturer’s point of view. Some people hate it, others like it and start feeling passionately about “their car, who everyone else dislikes.”

I think this may be something that the Chrysler cars that looked like they were taken from a 1930s mob movie started..

For some reason, the big Japanese trucks seem to require truly ugly grilles. The Nissan and Honda big truck front-ends aren’t much better, and these haven’t sold well even here in California, which is otherwise dominated by Japan and Korea.

Of course, I shouldn’t talk – I drive an ice cream truck, but I love it!

It bears a lot of resemblance to the light-duty trucks from Ford and Dodge. Oddly Chevy, with the most ‘class’ truck look, now looks the least like every other truck out there.

I’m curious what the mileage will be, and if the Prius fans will still be crowing about Toyota’s commitment to the environment after Toyota adds this to their SUV fleet.

    ‘class’ should have been ‘classic’.

    Oops.

    samerwriter,

Yeah, I’m wondering the same thing. Toyota may be pushing their luck on this one.

    Foobarista,

I’m not a fan of the Element but I sure see a lot of them around.

Bulldog admirers should love it :)

The following is in response to samerwriter’s comment. It would be difficult to be a tradesperson hauling ladders and whatnot w/a Prius, wouldn’t you agree? Restaurants, grocery stores, AND car companies offer folks a range of choices. Whether you want to be a responsible consumer (personal health, environment, etc.) is up to you. That’s what makes the U.S. great…and keeps heart doctors, Johnson and Johnson (think stents), Jenny Craig, and Saudi Arabi rolling in the dough. At least car companies are finally coming around on this point and embracing energy-saving technologies. I think that’s something to be celebrated, even if there might be an unattractive bulldog in the lineup!

The Element has a whole bunch of nice features, like a couple of “real” plugs, a tailgate you can sit on, an interior you can hose out (nice after long camping trips, preparing for backpacking trips into bear country where you need your interior to be smell-free, etc), and it’s fairly short and narrow but still decently big inside due to its boxy shape. It actually has a smaller footprint than our Camry, and fits easily into our one-car garage. It also gets in the mid 20s for gas mileage, and is the only car I’ve owned that actually does better than its EPA mileage rating.

Only complaint: it’s underpowered. But nowadays I’ll take good gas mileage over the ability to pull a boat someday.

Japanese brand pickup trucks in the past have had the reputation of being “wimpy”, “sissified” trucks as compared to their US counterparts, regardless of their merits as trucks. So the latest models have been styled to look more rugged and macho, as that is supposedly what American truck buyers are looking for. Look at the Nissan Titan to see their take on rugged and macho.

I think it is just the color making it look ugly. That blue really is irritating to me. I think a silver one would look better and that is what I am on the lookout for.
I currently have an 03 4runner(silver) and people are always gazing at it.

Bland looking, only that it can tow an impressive 10,000 lbs.

Does not have the “Lady Truck” look of the F-150, Better mileage than the Dodge and does not have the upturned look of the GMC/ Chevy. I like it! If the price is right and it doesn’t suck gas, good bye F-150!
