JLP the Handyman Update
By JLP | August 28, 2006
This past weekend I was a busy man! I replaced my daughter’s ceiling fan with a new one that matched her room. It was time. Before the new fan, people would come over to our house and the first thing they would ask is, “what’s up with your daughter’s ceiling fan? How come it doesn’t match her room?” Actually, no one ever said anything but I could tell from the looks on their faces that they were thinkin’ it! Installing the fan wasn’t too difficult.
During the installation, the only thing that made me cuss (for some reason I tend to cuss when I do household projects) was the little screws kept falling in the holes in the top of the fan. Every time that happened I had to take the fan down and shake it (sometimes violently) until they fell out. Then I had to hang the fan back up, crawl down the ladder, and find the stinkin’ screws! But, I got it up and it works fine! My wife was holding my daughter last night before bed and she (my daughter) pointed up at the fan and said, “Daddy, do that?” I thought that was pretty cool!
After my earlier unsuccessful attempt at fixing the toilet, I did manage to get it done yesterday afternoon. I did have to go back to Lowes for the THIRD freakin’ time to buy a new shutoff valve but after that everything went fine. It’s just amazing to me that something so simple can cause SO MUCH PAIN AND AGONY! If it wouldn’t have caused so much damage, I would have LOVED to have taken a sledge hammer to that stupid toilet! Instead, I used it as a GROWTH experience and now I’m a better man because of it. I have told no less than 300 people that, “I fixed my toilet.” They kind of look at me strange but I don’t care.
Guess what? I still have lots more projects on my list. I guess I’ll have some more blogging material. Hopefully they won’t be as humiliating as my experience this past weekend. I mean really, a guy can only take so much!

congrats on getting your toilet fixed! My dad used to have us kids help on home improvement projects (ie. fetching tools). it was the last thing we wanted to do, but it made for some humorous stories, kept us out of trouble and made us all pretty handy!

Hopefully you weren’t too flushed after that job. But I bet you have a new fan club!
Good thing you didn’t take the sledge to your toilet. It might have bounced right back and hit you on the head. That would have taken a lot of the fun out of it.

I always enjoyed helping my dad out with projects around the house. I remember when we lived in this ground floor apartment, and he wanted a basement so bad, so he enlisted us to help him get rid of the dirt and pieces of concrete while he dug one. Every day when we would go out to play at some friends’ house down the road, he would have us take what we could carry, and dump it in the ditch down by the creek.
Good luck with the other projects!

I had a toilet experience like that once, too. After many tears and much anguish, next time I’m just calling a plumber!
