Are Any of You Outlook Experts?

By JLP | September 14, 2006

Somehow I did something to Outlook 2007 Beta and now my folders can’t be searched. Also, from the Outlook Today screen, the folders can’t be reached from the menu on the right. When I click on my Inbox from the Outlook Today screen, I get the following message:

Cannot display the folder. Microsoft Office Outlook cannot access the specified folder location.

I get the feeling that I have somehow moved my folders. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Can I uninstall and reinstall Outlook? If so, how do I do that without losing my Outlook files? Also, if I use the Add/Remove Programs feature in Windows, does it completely remove the program or can I reinstall it?

Lots of questions…

Having spent a lot of time moving Outlook/Outlook Express files over the past few months (the joys of a new PC), I can tell you that you’re usually going to find your email folders in an “Application Data” subfolder, often under “Documents and Settings/username”. (You might need to enable “show hidden files and folders” to find it.)

Some other places it might be found are listed here.

If you can find those, then you should be able to copy them elsewhere, reinstall Outlook, and then import them back in.

With questions like this, you are going to attract the Linux advocates in the audience. I’m certainly one of them. I could simply post flames about MS products, but that just seems petty.

Instead, I think there’s a more important point to be made. MS and their partisans claim that one of the drawbacks to open source software is that there isn’t a company standing behind it.

If one of your readers gives you a solution to this problem, you are getting the same kind of support that the open source community routinely supplies. Microsoft charges money for their products. If they want to claim that they are better and that their support is better, they owe their customers a better product and better support. I’m not holding my breath. I’m using Linux, OpenOffice, Firefox and Thunderbird.

I suggest you look at using a different email client called Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/) by the good people at mozilla. The email client is easy to use and works very well. I have used this email client at home(where my non-technical wife uses it) and work for many years.

I installed the first Office Beta and found the new Outlook unusable–it crashed several times a day on me. I uninstalled the beta, re-installed the previous version, and everything seemed to still be there. Of course, your mileage may vary…

I’m a professional Windows software developer and just have to say that I try not to use Microsoft’s beta products. They just seem to have too many bugs. Once, they’re released, then I install them, but not before.
