College Kids and Debt

By JLP | September 20, 2006

Amy Hoak over at MarketWatch has written a useful article titled Five Things to Teach Your College Student About Managing Debt that should be read by both parents and college students. Learning how to manage debt while in college is very important. It seems that too many students simply do not understand what they are obligating themselves to when they get that first credit card and immediately start charging things up.

One tip I have for parents who can afford it, is to consider getting a Visa Reloadable Prepaid Card with a set dollar amount. That way once the money is spent, it’s spent and nothing can be charged until more money is “loaded” unto the card.

Every subsequent generation is learning so much more than the previous generation. When I went to college 89/90, the credit card lenders were enticing you with water bottles(maybe they still do this)but “having” a credit card wasnt as common.

Thank goodness history is learning from itself!
