Just How Expensive is HP Ink?

Just how expensive is HP ink? I knew it was expensive. I just didn’t think it was THAT expensive.

I’ve pretty much sworn off inkjet printers because of the cost of ink. Worse, I print fairly seldom at home and the cartridge nozzles always seem to be hopelessly clogged up with dried ink when I need them most.
Now I’ve returned to my printing roots and only buy laser printers. The up-front cost is usually a little more (though decent printers can be had for under $100) and the cost for a toner cartridge is more than for a thingy of ink, but the toner seems to last me nearly forever.

I agree with samerwriter, I would only go with ink again if I needed to print photos, and even then only if it was a common thing. In that case I would use a CIS (Continuous Ink System) where you just by bottles of ink and tubes run into the cartridge. We replaced my wife’s old Epson with an HP Laserjet 1020 and are compeltely satisfied with it.

When it comes to consumer printers, the cost of the ink is usually relative to the original cost of the printer. So, when you got that “great deal” on a color photo printer, free after rebate, you really just told HP “I’d like to pay for my printer in usage installments, instead of up-front.”
You’ll notice that higher volume business printers – even inkjets – have much larger cartridges and a lower cost per page.
