The 10 Best-Selling Cars of 2006

By JLP | November 10, 2006

Perusing through the December issue of Kiplinger’s, I came across a list of the Ten Best-Selling Cars/SUVs of 2006:

1. Toyota Camry
2. Honda Accord
3. Toyota Corolla
4. Honda Civic
5. Chevy Impala
6. Chevy Cobalt
7. Nissan Altima
8. Dodge Caravan
9. Chevy Trailblazer
10. Honda Odyssey

I’m a little surprised to see the Chevy Trailblazer on this list since it is considered a gaz-guzzler. Sadly, only 40% of the cars listed are American-made and non of them are Fords.

Happily, the cars at the top of the list are known for being well-made, long-lasting vehicles. I’ve driven both the Impala and the Cobalt as rentals and I can see why they would be popular, too. I don’t see many on the road though so I am surprised to see them at the top of this list. Maybe the reason they are bestsellers is because rental agencies buy up so many of them?

My Civic was made in the US. My husband’s Chevy was not.

This list doesn’t include trucks though — I think the two best selling vehicles in the US are:

    1. Ford F-series
    2. Chevy Silverado

I just got a new Civic Hybrid and I’m loving it.

Wonder where an updated Ford Taurus might have placed in the list? I was sad to see that model go. It always reminded me of Robocop

As for me, I anticipate driving my ’01 Camry into the next decade. I had an unkillable ’93 Corolla for 12 years before that, which still ran fine when I sold it.

I agree with savvy saver. The last two chevys I drove were made in Canada, and the Honda was made in the US. Why is it better to buy “American” cars when they cost more, don’t last as long, are usually subjected to several safety recalls and aren’t even made in the US?

Taxes & pension plans are driving automobiles manufacturers to relocate to other countries. That’s the reason why American companies cant spend their money on quality management and R&D because they have too many hurdles to jump which results in an inflated price on the vehicle. Implementing Fair Tax would bring American quality cars back to the U.S by taking away the punishment of our tax system.

I bought a used ’93 Camry two years ago and it has consistently been a great car.

I drove it from SF to Central Oregon and then back to California. And it survived both drives flawlessly.

build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door….with the globalization of the auto industry, it is surprising that more American cars don’t make the list…..Ford cars, except for the Mustang, lag far behind “Japanese” competitors….

The best car is not on the list. The best car is a 2003 VW GTI.

I like the fact that the top selling cars are not gas guzzlers. I’d love to see even more Honda Civics and fewer Chevy Trailblazer’s on the road.

Man if these aren’t the most boring cars on the face of the planet. I’d rather have a Benz and have to take it to the shop once in awhile than drive one of these things.

A VW as the best car? I don’t think so. ;)

Gotta love the reliability of Toyotas and Hondas.

I’m from a Honda & Toyota family, and now have both :)

It is very sad to see how, slowly, the american cars will dissapear from Top 10 list.
But let’s hope in better future with the new Fusion, Milan, Sebring, etc.
