As Cap Would Say…
By JLP | December 1, 2006
I bought some crap. Only this is cool crap! This is the HP xb2000 Notebook Expansion Base:

I like it because:
1. It lifts my laptop up so I don’t feel like I have to hunch over when I’m sitting at my desk. It gives my laptop a sort of desktop feel but without actually owning a desktop.
2. I like the way it cleans up the messy wires. Everything is plugged in behind the base so I don’t have to look at sloppy wires running all over my desk.
I don’t like it because:
1. They didn’t send a separate power supply for the base unit, which means I have to use the power supply for the laptop. I don’t like this because I would like to hide the power supply but I can’t without making a lot of work for myself unplugging it to take it somewhere. Sure, I could buy another power supply but I don’t want to spend ANOTHER $100 or so that is would cost.
2. The keyboard and mouse that come with the base are CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP! I ended up sticking with my Logitec wireless system.
3. The speakers on the base unit are too “tinny-sounding” (did I spell that right?). They could be MUCH better.
Overall I’m happy with my crap and will remain happy with it until I have to replace my laptop which also means I’ll have to replace my docking station.

I don’t think a power supply costs $100… have you checked?
My expansion base from HP (a different model) just has a regular 3-prong cord that goes into the wall/surge protector. Even a power brick only costs like $30 or do, if I remember correctly from when I was looking.

Check ebay for a second power supply. I had a similar situation when I received my new work laptop, my setup at work had a power supply but no second one for using it mobile. Like you, I didn’t want to deal with unplugging and constantly plugging one in.
So, I hopped on ebay and found one for around 20 bucks. It wasn’t an exact replica of the original power supply, but it worked great and cost a fraction of the original price. So I would check online before spending big money on a new power supply, I’m sure you can find something for a very affordable price.
