Check Out Schott’s Almanac 2007

By JLP | December 4, 2006

Here’s a pretty cool book I picked up over the weekend. It’s one of those books you can spend hours reading (yes, you can read an almanac). This almanac, the first one I have EVER purchased, has a little bit of everything divided up in the following sections:

Chronicle – summary of the year

The World & Gazetteer

Society & Health

Media & Celebrity

Music & Movies

Books & Art

Sci, Tech, Net

Travel & Leisure

Sports

The Nation

The States

Government

Money

Form & Faith

Ephemerides

Index & Errata

As you can probably guess, my favorite section is Money but pretty much all the sections are fun to read. Here’s a list of some of the cool things I found in the pages of Schott’s Almanac 2007:

The FBI’s Most Wanted List – Bin Laden is at the top with a $25,000,000 reward.

The Most Polite Cities – New York was on top (I would have never guessed that)

Occupational Employment & Wages – Highest paid group is Management with a mean wage of $41.87 per hour

Oddest Book Title of the Year – WINNER: People Who Don’t Know They Are Dead: How They Attach Themselves to Unsuspecting Bystanders and What to Do About It by Gary Leon Hill (yeah, that’s pretty strange)

Most Literate Cities – Top 10: Seattle – Minneapolis – Washington, DC – Atlanta – San Francisco – Denver – Boston – Pittsburgh – Cincinatti – St. Paul

Most Unusual Street Names – No. 1: Psycho Path, Traverse City, MI; My favorite: The intersection of Clinton & Fidelity, Houston, TX

CxOs – What the various executive titles mean:

CAO

Chief Analytics Officer

CCO

Chief Compliance Officer

CEO

Chief Executive Officer

CFO

Chief Financial Officer

CIO

Chief Information Officer

CKO

Chief Knowledge Officer

CMO

Chief Marketing Officer

CNO

Chief Networking Officer

COO

Chief Operating Officer

CPO

Chief Procurement Officer

CRO

Chief Risk Officer

CSO

Chief Strategy Officer

CTO

Chief Technical Officer

CWO

Chief Wisdom Officer

That’s just a few of the many cool things you’ll find in Schott’s Almanac 2007

I always thought Almanacs were cool but I also don’t think I’d ever buy one. Lots of trivia but personally I can’t see it having any worth. Just something to skim through at the bookstore.
