Comments Back UP!

By JLP | December 20, 2006

Well, comments are back up. It is amazing how much YOUR comments add to this blog!

Take a wild guess what was causing the problem. S-P-A-M! Loads and loads of computer-generated spam! If this happens again, I’m going to have to institute some sort of change. I’m not sure what, but I’ll have to do something. I might try some sort of verification step or something like that. I hate those things but if they stop computer-generated spam I might go for it.

I’ve got a spam catcher plug-in, it’s pretty good and it lets me flush the caught spam when I want to. Maybe that’s an option to consider even though I’m sure you’ve already got one.

I just don’t get it – what benefit is comment spam if you send so much that nobody ever gets to see it?

Independent George (did you get your name from Seinfeld?),

I think spammers have two main goals:

    1. get traffic to their websites
    2. cause as much havoc as possible

I agree, it makes absolutely no sense.

An image verifier works prety well. Also, requiring people to register before they can post (which is a nice option in WordPress) should cut it down quite a bit as well.

Glad to see comments are back up. Now if Yahoo would just show the RSS for your blog. Has been showing “No New Updates for 3 Days” for weeks now. I just click through to your home page, but the headlines via RSS was a nice feature. Not sure why Yahoo does this sometimes.
