My Thoughts On The New Wall Street Journal

By JLP | January 2, 2007

IT’S TOO SMALL! In my mind, the wider version gave the old WSJ some authority. Of course, I must confess that I don’t like change. So, I might be the slightest bit biased. One thing I always liked about the old WSJ was organized layout on the front pages of each section. Now it is all jumbled and looks like a puzzle with the stories wrapped around each other. In other words, it looks like EVERY OTHER NEWSPAPER IN THE U. S.! I don’t like that they moved the letters to the editor to another section of the paper, away from their own editorials.

Is there anything I like about the new design? Nope. At least not yet. I’m going to have to get used to it.

If you haven’t had a chance to see the new paper yet, you can check out The Readers’ Guide (PDF).

I like the new size. It sure makes it easier to read!

Our subscription at work ran out, so I haven’t seen a paper copy in months.

I like the new size and type. The type is easier to read. The size is also easier to handle (for whatever reason), and it doesn’t fold down in the middle because it’s too wide (could be the way I hold it, I don’t fold it over). I like it.

I made a couple of suggestions in October and surprise, the WSJ implemented them! Great changes! This will save the WSJ.

For the most part, I like the changes the Wall Street Journal introduced yesterday. I especially like the smaller size because it’s much easier to handle on the train. That being said, I am pretty disappointed. Since introducing their changes yesterday, they increased my print subscription renewal (Services.WSJ.com) from $149 to $249. I intentionally put off renewing my print subscription on Monday, when it was $149, so I could see the changes on Tuesday. The changes are definitely not worth an extra $100, when the same content is available for $79 online. They did a great job in creating buzz and increasing interest in readership, but when it came time to achieve a print renewal, at least with me, they failed.

    Charles,

I agree. Their prices are too high. I have been a subscriber for 10 years. This last year was the BIGGEST price increase ever (from $215 to $249).

I have to say, I don’t particularly care for the new sizing. The formatting is not terribly offputting but the pricing is definitely far too expensive, even for the opportunity to look like an adult on the train.
