Of course the list is much longer than just 10. Basically you should avoid any processed "food", especially ones that list any kind of nutritional additives. The best advice is to avoid anything that your great-grandmother would not have recognized as food.

Read "Unhappy Meals" by Michael Pollan in the New York Times. It's the best discussion about health and food I ever read.

First you have a great web site!

2nd, after reading that list, I'm hungry!

Actually, thanks for putting up the link. I buy those Campbell's chicken noodle soups by the case for a quick lunch and they are VERY salty. Overall, I try to eat healthy, but that article is a reminder of just how easy it is to astray. To imagine that a Starbuck's latte is as bad a quarter pounder - yikes! And the food labels - you really need to watch the servings as with that chicken pot pie at the top. Who would just eat a half a pie? Over the holidays i brought Egg Nog into the house and then realized that the stuff has 3x more sugar than Coca Cola, but that they cover it up by using 8 ounce servings of Egg Nogg on the label. OUCH.

As for the "embalming" comment,

either I, as a diabetic, die of an overdose of vegetables, or go out the fun way, on sugar substitutes.

But seriously, you are wary of sugar substitutes!!?

You think highly refined carbs are natural? There are only a handful of naturally occuring sugars, and the common white sugar added to most foods is not one of them.

How can you not try a Burger King Quad Stacker at least once?!?! Maybe their plan is to have something so ridculous you just have to try it. It worked on me. Oddly, I didn't feel that full after finishing it.

Hey JLP:

I was sitting pretty until I hit the Dove ice cream entry on the list. I do, however, believe in a few treats.

With money and calories, little splurges help me contain damaging binges.

Thanks for the fun and helpful post!

And after you embalm your body from the inside out with the sugar substitutes.....

The sugar and calories aren't bad at all, just in moderation. Personal finance bloggers should easily understand that idea when choosing their diets.

well, I'm Diabetic, and have greatly appreciated the low-sugar low-fat fad of the last decade or so.

Whether it's "no sugar added" fruit cups, to "low carb" pasta, I think anyone can have his "cake and eat it too".

Oh speaking of cake, grocery stores now offer lower fat, lower sugar cakes in the bakery section. You can add "no sugar" whipped cream, and "no sugar" chocolate syrup to that.

JLP, would you like to swap links, my blog is BioHealth Investor, www.biohealthinvestor.com.

Also, email me at admin@biohealthinvestor.com, I have an invitation for you to join my blog network if you are interested.

keep up the good work.

Thank God some food manufacturers are finally releasing healthier food. Campbell's has their new lower sodium and fat soups that taste just the same without all the crap that kills your body. I would of hated to live through the 80's knowing that food companies didnt have to report all the ingredients in their food.

I haven't tried it yet but what some people do with the chicken soup is drain out the broth and then fill the can with water and cook it like that. I guess it gets most of the salt out.
