The Conceirge Con Scam Alert! (from Money Magazine)

By JLP | February 13, 2007

I was browsing through my March issue of Money and found this:

The Concierge Con

According to the article, you’re staying in a hotel and you get a call from someone claiming to be from the front desk. They tell you that there is a problem with your credit card and that they need to verify the card number and billing address.

DON’T DO IT!

According to the article, the scammer can simply call the hotel and ask for “Room XXX” and the hotel will put the call through. Then, once they have you on the phone they can try to talk you into giving them your credit card number. One thing they most likely will not have is YOUR NAME. Simply ask them what your name is and see what they say. If by some chance they do know your name, tell them that you will come down to the front desk and take care of the matter in person. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you give your credit card number over the phone.

I would hope that most people would not fall for this scam. But, you never know. That’s why I wanted to give you a heads up on this one.

I get a calls of a similar nature all the time. Someone calls from some “pharmacy” that I’ve never heard of, claiming that I have a prescription for hydrocodone (Vicodin) and asking if I want to refill it.

Wow, this really makes me think hard about whether I’ve actually given card details over the phone at hotels I’ve stayed in. I’ve had to stay in a number of hotels over the last few years because of travel committments. Hmmm … better go check my balances and statements now.
