JLP’s Question of the Day – Blogging

By JLP | February 15, 2007

A few months ago I installed some little bookmarking icons at the bottom of each post. They look like this:

I did so for a couple of reasons:

1. They help generate blog traffic when readers use them, and…

2. They are a cool way for readers to “save” articles that they like for future reference

Anyway, my question of the day is related to this topic:

Have you ever used these social bookmarking tools (either on this blog or other blogs)?

Personally, I like the del.icio.us tool the best. I like it when I’m on a website or blog and they have this tool available. It’s so much easier than having to manually save a post to del.icio.us. I’m much more likely to save something if the del.icio.us tool is readily available on a blog.

Reddit and Digg are nice too but normally all they do is bring a huge surge of traffic with little or no lasting impact. Sure, the traffic is nice, but it isn’t “quality” traffic like you get when a blogger like The Consumerist or Lifehacker links to you. By “quality traffic” I’m talking about readers who stick around, comment, bookmark my blog, and come back again. I do submit my own posts to Reddit and Digg but ONLY because I have noticed some search traffic from their websites.

For all that I’ve been blogging for a year, I’m sort of technologically behind the curve and don’t really understand the whole Del.icio.us thing etc. Do you have a post that explains it better? (obviously since I don’t really understand how to use them I personally have never clicked on any of them-so that answers that question!)

And how do you add the cool little widget anyway?

I need to improve my own site. . . .

Honestly JLP, I’ve never used them anywhere…but I may not be your target either.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I know I never use the social bookmarking buttons, but I do click the add to Google button.

Nope – never used them. Never bothered to figure out what they even are.

Ditto to anoop. I’ve never used the widgets on your page. The del.icio.us Firefox plugin is all I need.

Sorry — I might use a text link but I have no clue what those teeny little icons even represent, and not inclined to figure them out. I’m behind the times again!

I don’t use them either. Do you have real evidence that they are actually driving traffic?

I don’t use them. I don’t understand them. I don’t even know where to start learning about them. I may have to break down and ask my kids about them. *Sigh*
