A Look at the Dow Jones Total Market Index Sector Performance

Here’s how the ten sectors of the Dow Jones Total Market Index have performed so far this year:

iShares DJ Total Market Sector Indexes

I included the performance of a portfolio equally weighted in each of the 10 sectors. Notice how it is outperforming the iShares Dow Jones Total Market Index (IYY).

    I have a little bit invested in IYZ… can’t complain.

    Of course, that’s because IYY is weighted by market capitalization, which means it owns more of the stocks that make up a greater share of the total market. The rank would be reversed if financials were doing better. The simple average “overweights” basic materials and natural resources.
