My Father-in-Law is Good For Something!
By JLP | April 23, 2007
I just received the following phone call:
JLP: “Hello”
Lady: “Hello. May I speak with Mr. P please?”
JLP: “This is Mr. P”
Lady: “Mr. P, I’m calling on behalf of the local Farmers Insurance Agency and what we’re doing is calling people to find out if we can save them money on their car insurance. Who do you currently have your auto insurance with?”
JLP: “My father-in-law”
Lady: (LAUGHTER)
JLP: “That pretty much ends this conversation.”
Lady: (more laughter) “Thank you sir, you have a nice evening.”

What can I say? I’m loyal! LOL!

Too funny! And until my father-in-law retired, I used that very same response to cold calling agents. It was so nice to shut them down and do so honestly!

I am a college student who knows nothing about car insurance, but I am really curious as to why this is funny…
anyone care to explain?

Hahaaaaa! My uncle is in the window business, so that line has worked on the window companies that have called over the years.
The other great line is to say, “Whoa, hold on, I’ve got a little fire in my kitchen that I really need to put out.” They usually let you go without a fuss!

I’ll admit to being rather brutal with “cold call” telemarketers: as soon as I figure out that it’s a cold caller, I hang up immediately.
And I’m in the Do-Not-Call list, which actually works quite well.

Jake,
It was funny to me because my father-in-law handles our auto insurance, which is an easy way of saying we aren’t in the market for car insurance.
It’s tough enough to get people to change insurance based on price. It’s even tougher trying to get them to leave their in-laws.

Thanks,
I am glad to know I am good for something! (;>)

It was nice that the telemarketer didn’t press you on it. Sounds like a rather pleasant cold call, all things considered.
