Microsoft Buying Yahoo!?
By JLP | May 4, 2007
I don’t normally blog about stuff like this but Microsoft possibly buying Yahoo! is interesting to me because I ALMOST bought Yahoo! stock for my boys’ portfolios. I never did and now I think I’ll hold off since they already own Microsoft. My gut tells me that this deal is going to fall through.

I think this merger makes more sense than most of the other deals which have rocked the market this week. Consider this: Yahoo gets more traffic than Google–Yahoo is ranked Alexa #1 for traffic. However, Google generates much more money in advertising revenue because they understand how to “monetize” their traffic. Microsoft/MSN has a decent idea about how to monetize traffic as well, but it doesn’t actually get much traffic relative to Google and Yahoo. By merging, Microsoft poses a huge threat to Google in terms of stealing advertising clients and other partnerships which Yahoo may already have in place.
My first reaction was “Yahoo? Who would want that company? Terry Semel is one step from being fired for lack of performance.” But I think Gates might actually be a suitable (and rich enough) buyer with the Yahoo stock price so deflated for the past year. Just my take on it.

That’s good– your boys have a little stock portfolio. I wanted to add Apple to my daughter portfolio, but I will wait awhile.
