Get Yourself Organized GIVEAWAY!
By JLP | May 7, 2007
I was in Target the other day, waiting while my wife picked out greeting cards (boring). As I waited, I came across Target’s organization section and that’s where I found Life.doc. Life.doc is an oranization binder created by a company called Buttoned Up. Life.doc is just one of several products that Buttoned Up offers.
Since I’m ALWAYS thinking about AllFinancialMatters, I decided to pick up two of the binders (one for me to try out and one to giveaway to one of my lucky readers!).
I haven’t had time to fully investigate Life.doc yet but I have at least looked through it. The binder contains tabs and information sheets for the following areas:
- Emergency Plan
- Family Basics
- Healthcare
- Insurance
- Dollars & Sense
- Legal Information
- Caregiver Information (for both kids and older parents)
- Household Information
The cool thing is that the binder comes with a CD Rom that contains all the documents as Word files that you can fill out on the computer. Once you have the document filled out, you can save it to your hard drive and also print it on the corresponding form that comes in the binder. This will give your binder a nice, clean look. It’s also great if you have sloppy handwriting.
Now, this is by no means a complete organization system. This is essentially a place to store all the information about your accounts, important phone numbers, contact information, account locations, etc. I don’t know about you but one of the frustrating things to me is when I need an account number or something like that and I have to spend time looking for the information. If you use the Life.doc binder correctly, you’ll have that information at your fingertips.
Here’s the really cool part: I’m giving away a Life.doc binder to ONE lucky reader. To enter the drawing, simply leave a comment. The drawing is open to residents of the United States and Canada. I’ll randomly select a winner on Wednesday. GOOD LUCK.
Oh, and if you don’t win, you can purchase a Life.doc binder for yourself either through the Buttoned Up website for $29.99 or at Target for $19.99.

This looks like a great tool. I think you have just shown me what several people I know will be getting as gifts soon

Looks great and really helpful. Thanks for the giveaway. Good stuff.
May 7th, 2007 at 11:09 am
It does look like a great tool. I’ve been slowly creating an secure (hopefully) electronic archive of all important documents but nothing beats a simple binder with all the information handy.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll wait until Thursday before deciding to buy one
May 7th, 2007 at 11:10 am
Sounds helpful to me.
May 7th, 2007 at 11:21 am
I’ve seen that in Target before and always wondered if it was worth the investment. Now that you’ve played up the features, I’m thinking I need to get one and try it out for myself!

Sounds like a great product, but what are your thoughts on customizing it to fit your “AllFinancialMatters all the time” lifestyle? In other words, will this product fit your more advanced financial needs or will it need to be tweaked (and if so, what thoughts do you have on adapting it to fit those needs)?
Thanks!
David

Not bad. Thanks for the free stuff as always!
May 7th, 2007 at 11:27 am
It would be good if it had a will document also for estate planning. Guess that would come under the legal section. Nice going with the giveway.
May 7th, 2007 at 11:32 am
That would be really helpful. Organization of my docs is pretty bad at my house.
May 7th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Looks like an interesting product. If I don’t get the giveaway one, I’ll probably try to find one to purchase
May 7th, 2007 at 11:48 am
Do people really have an emergency plan? What does one put in an emergency plan?
May 7th, 2007 at 11:49 am
Looks like a target for a thief. hmmm
May 7th, 2007 at 11:50 am
p.s. the link to getbuttonedup didn’t work…
May 7th, 2007 at 11:54 am
Hope it has about 100 pages for all my bank accounts.
May 7th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Dear random number generator: Think of me.
And JLP, don’t forget to mail it before postal rates go up
May 7th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
Neat! I may have to go look at this in the store.
May 7th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
Looks like a good tool. It reminds me of The Beneficiary Book put out in the early 1990s.
Any tool that helps you organize is a good idea. If it also can act as a resource for your loved ones, so much the better.
May 7th, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Hey thanks for being so considerate of all of your readers. I always enjoy free stuff, and I’m interested in seeing what this binder can do for me.
May 7th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
I have been looking at getting information organized around the house. Maybe this is just what I need.
May 7th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Sounds pretty neat. Right now I have my own ad hoc binder but this sounds like it would work better.
May 7th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
I have a home-made version of this, but I really like the idea that it comes with a CD rom! What a cool tool!
May 7th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
I’ve been reading all about organizing important information into a binder or a cabinet, but this seems really nice for having it all accessible. though I would be nervous as to putting this anywhere too accessible.
May 7th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Count me in. I’ve been looking for a way to get organized.
May 7th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Wow. Nice! I’d like one of those. I like the integrated CD feature.
May 7th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
God knows we need some kind of help around here, maybe this would do the job.
May 7th, 2007 at 1:02 pm
That sounds really cool. I’m going to Target today and I think I’ll check it out in person. I love free stuff, so count me in, but this may be worth a purchase.
May 7th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
I like that they have included an emergency plan. I think that is really important to discuss that with your kids. If you have children they need to know ahead of time what to do so they don’t panic.
May 7th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
Looks very useful for a disorganized person like me! Count me in. Thanks!
May 7th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
This is something my mom could really use, I might have to stop by Target and take a look at it.
May 7th, 2007 at 1:14 pm
Looks like it could be useful. I like the CDRom idea – can you alter the word docs to fit personal circumstances?
May 7th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Sounds good for someone young who is starting out in the real world (ME).
May 7th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Organization is my weakness. Maybe one of these could help.
May 7th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Sign me up! This is great!
May 7th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Hmmm….a pretty version of my “Pile ‘O Important Stuff”. What a great idea! Sign me up!
May 7th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Sign me up…I have been working on this creating my own items…this will help me get a jump start
May 7th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
looks pretty cool. thanks!
May 7th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
good idea – need to get one so my wife has access to this stuff without searching through hundreds of paper files
May 7th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
I saw these while on a trip to price-check blenders.
May 7th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Sounds like I would be able to get rid of my various piles of clutter without tossing out unpaid bills!
May 7th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Just the help I need to get it together….
May 7th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
sign me up!
May 7th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
I saw these at Target over the weekend. It looks like a really good idea. One thing I do for tracking account numbers is I use a filing system to keep statements. On the front of the file folder I write down the account number and website login information.
May 7th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Pick me!
May 7th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
I have been trying to do something like this on my own and have really struggled with it. I want to switch over to this and also gift these to my 3 kids. What a fantastic idea!
Thank you!!!!
May 7th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Now if they just came out with a product that can remember all of my internet passwords. I finally started an Excel spreadsheet with all of my passwords on it (since I have to change most of them every 60-90 days or so). Of course, you guessed it…I password protected the Excel spreadsheet too.
May 7th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
That binder is a great idea!
May 7th, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Cool. Fingers crossed
May 7th, 2007 at 4:12 pm
Pick me! Pick me! (sorry for the annoying tone, I am just very excited about the giveaway!) I am 26 and just got married. I recently started reading your blog as I am in dire need of some financial organization in my life. This would be a perfect first step in turning my (our) financial life around. Thank you for the consideration!
May 7th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
I’m in.
May 7th, 2007 at 5:08 pm
This would be a great item to win…hope I get lucky!
I’d love something simple like this to help organize important records.
May 7th, 2007 at 5:27 pm
You should go shopping with your wife more often for boring things so we can reap the benefits!
May 7th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
My husband got me reading this site. I think it sounds like a cool thing. I have enjoyed reading your blog and learning.
May 7th, 2007 at 6:09 pm
That sounds like just what I need to get organized.
May 7th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

May 7th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
Count me in.
Thanks
May 7th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
I’ve been meaning to organize all of my information like this for a while. Thanks for the post!
May 7th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
I saw this at Target and think it’s a great idea. Count me in!
May 7th, 2007 at 9:02 pm
I’m in!
Thanks!
May 7th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
Oooh. Target is my home away from home, but I’ve never seen this organizer before. Probably because I go straight from one clearance section to the next without looking up.
Cheers!
May 7th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
I’m heading over to Iraq at the end of this month. This would be awesome for my wife to use while she’s tending to the house and our twin year-old sons!
May 7th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
It looks like something I would use. I hope I win!
Thanks for the contest.
I check out your site regularly, and get lots to think about.
May 8th, 2007 at 5:57 am
Great giveaway! I was just looking at one at Barnes and Noble last week – I ended up buying the to do notebook as I am a heavy list maker and yes, the carbon copy stickers in the back were too wonderful to pass up. I didn’t realize Target also sold this!
May 8th, 2007 at 7:25 am
I recently received an offer from T. Rowe Price for a CD-Rom offering similar capabilities for organizing personal records. Probably the signs of a groundswell developing to collect information for the tidal wave of boomers now cresting into retirement.
May 8th, 2007 at 8:48 am
Great idea, every financial outfit should be offering this to their customers.
May 8th, 2007 at 8:54 am
me me me!!!!!
May 8th, 2007 at 8:56 am
Count me in please.
May 8th, 2007 at 9:15 am
count me in too!
May 8th, 2007 at 9:19 am
It’s a great idea. I could use it.
May 8th, 2007 at 9:30 am
Worth a shot. I enjoy the blog.
May 8th, 2007 at 9:56 am
Ooh. I want in.
May 8th, 2007 at 10:01 am
This sounds great, better than a spreadsheet inventory I made up that had everything on 4 pages. Didn’t have to pull a file for information, saved a lot of time. I am in.

May 8th, 2007 at 10:46 am
That looks like a much more efficient way of organizing information than keeping a towering pile of business cards in a drawer.
May 8th, 2007 at 10:55 am
I love anything that helps you organize!! In the past year, I have cleared so much material clutter from my life and I feel so much lighter for it. It sounds like this set would be great so you can clear the financial clutter from life and keep all the essentials organized as as well. This would help so many people including myself!!
Thanks!!

First of all, thank you for hosting the contest and for having this website
If I don’t win the binder, I can only hope that ButtonedUp or someone else will come along and make a web-based equivalent of the Word forms…hmm, maybe I’ll do it if no one else picks up the slack

Great Idea! I put together a “generic” folder for my family to use in case something ever happened to me. Mine is not quite as pretty but effective!!
May 8th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
Great product. Organization isn’t my strong point, so I’ll throw my name in!
May 8th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
Been wanting to get a copy of this. It sounds really cool.
May 8th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

May 8th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
