JLP’s Weekly Roundup

By JLP | June 2, 2007

Jim thinks gas boycotts are stupid. – I’ll second that.

Flexo has decided to continue renting rather than buying a house.

Nickel posted a reader question about cashing in a Roth IRA to pay off a house. – I don’t like this idea at all.

FMF highlights a Kiplinger piece on the true cost of owning a home.

MBH asks: are inflated shipping charges on eBay bad? – I think the end price including shipping cost is what’s important. However, I don’t care for really high shipping costs. It seems like eBay sellers have found a loophole.

Here’s 100 by 30 Project’s version of the debt snowball – I like it when people think about stuff before they do it.

This is cute. Tricia interviewed her 5-year old son about money. – I will say that my boys (ages 11 and 10) are a LOT more frugal now that they get an allowance and any extras have to be bought with their money. When they ask for stuff my wife and I just tell them that they have THEIR money and they are free to purchase that item with THEIR money if they want to. It works like a charm and ceases all attempts at begging because they know what the end result is. Now, a lot of parents would think that $10 per week for allowance is excessive, but I like the fact that if they manage it right, they can actually buy something with it. Oh, and they have to pay tithe and save 25% for long-term goals so it’s not like they get to spend the entire $10.

Congrats to the Budgeting Babe for reaching $10,000 in her “rainy day fund.”

Yes, I agree that the every-three-thousand-mile-oil-change is bunk. – Think about it: those oil change shops lose out on nearly half their business if people wait until every 5,000 miles to get their oil changed.

Golbguru questions David Bach’s math. – I’ll agree that Bach could have done a much better job illustrating his point.

Pete on contemplating the risks when setting up an emergency fund. – It’s a lot different approach than the “have 3 to 6 months of savings” plan.

Sun offers up his first trading experience with Zecco.

Single Ma’s thoughts on food stamps.
