A Little Off-Topic Humor: Atlanta Considers Banning Baggy Pants

By JLP | August 23, 2007

Okay, this is WAAAAY off topic but I thought it was funny.

Atlanta is considering banning baggy pants. Maybe Atlanta is being a bit extreme but don’t think I haven’t wished for something like this to happen in my own town.

I’m all for freedom of expression but shouldn’t people consider what other people have to look at when they walk around with their pants down? I kid you not, I saw a guy walking out of the mall with his waistband BELOW his buttocks! I and everyone who saw him, had full view of his boxer shorts. Heck, he might as well have just taken his pants off and just walked around in his underwear. It’s the same thing with women. Who wants to see rolls of fat hanging down over a waistband? I know I don’t.

Seriously, I don’t understand how this is fashion.

Of course the bad part about banning stuff like this is where do you draw the line and who’s in charge of policing everyone? It would be much easier if people would just exhibit some common sense and wear clothes that fit their bodies.

Okay, I’m done ranting. Back to personal finance…

I haven’t noticed much of the baggy pants thing here in SLC recently. Must be a regional thing, or maybe I’m not getting out as much as I used to.

Years ago, when my wife worked as a library (in the children’s and young adult sections) she told a story of a boy with those kinds of baggy pants. Apparently, he’d spotted a group of girls me wanted to take notice and sort of strutted past them. They noticed, but it all came unhinged when his pants dropped down around his ankles and he fell flat on his face!

Baggy pants are fine… saggy or low-cut pants are not. I don’t care if someone wears baggy pants, as long as their butt is covered.

There was an interview on TV recently with the guy who has proposed this bill in Georgia. As I was watching, I couldn’t help but think of how this new fashion statement compares to when Elvis Presley became popular. Wasn’t there this same kind of negative attitude towards youth and change then? Didn’t the ‘older’ generation discourage kids from dancing a certain way and listening to rock and roll or even ban certain types of dancing and music altogether?

Wait, what country is this happening in? The land of the free? Apparently the land of the free needs more rules and regulations. With our freedom we all have choices. This means we must decide how to conduct ourselves. Maybe we have forgotten the level of responsibility that we must have to keep our freedom. This responsibility includes considering how the choices we make effect others and their freedom.

Consideration for others begins at home, as does self respect, social etiquette, and personal financial responsibility. When did we as a country stop teaching these things at home? When will we, as a country, start? Isn’t this one of the responsibilities that come with our freedom? Will we ignore our responsibility and simply continue making laws that infringe on our freedoms? I hope not…

I think sagging pants looks stupid. I wear baggy pants, but they stay 2 inches bellow my belly button (on my hips). I have looked at this topic from many sides and have came to a conclusion. When you go to a public pool or beach is swimwear not underwear? AND THATS FINE? Women are walking around in BRAS and PANTIES basicly. And men are walking around in BOXERS. So next time you think a bout going to a public pool or beach just DONT because everyone is an OBSCENE INDECENT CRIMINAL. And it discusts you.
