Question of the Day – Holiday Budget Busters
By JLP | December 3, 2007
Here’s today’s question of the day:
I would have to say for us, it’s usually in the food category. We buy too many specialty items during this time of year usually because we make too many trips to the store!
What about you? What’s your holiday weakness?

Gifts for my partner. I used to blow $500 or more on gifts for him alone.

Well, I’ve really worked to get this beast under control — but my biggest budget buster is on unneeded decorative stuff. I enjoy the process of going shopping for Christmas decorations and coming up with something new and creative to make the house festive way too much fun for my own good.
Over the past few years I’ve really cut down on this little gotcha, but I still feel the siren call of the christmas ornaments (and I go for the fancy expensive ones that are little works of art, not the cheap tacky ones). Not to mention the allure of lots of live pointsettias and little pine trees.

P.S. — How I keep this under control is reminding myself that I’ve committed to owning less STUFF and put a strict limit on the amount of stuff I can store (three medium sized storage tubs.) If I exceed my assigned storage capacity (which is full) then I have to get rid of some stuff.

Last-minute tag team gifts: You give me and now I give you.
We have tried to avoid this by stock piling gifts during major sales.
