13 “Natural Laws” of Success

By JLP | January 11, 2008

Brian Tracy’s Change Your Thinking Change Your Life (Affiliate Link) is a pretty good motivational book. Sure, there’s some fluff (most motivational books contain fluff) but overall, I like the book’s message. I also like the fact that it is an easy read and one which I can come back to whenever I need a motivational boost.

While looking through the book last night, I noticed that Brian mentions several laws of success. I thought these laws were interesting and thought you might find them interesting too. Here’s a nice concise list of the success laws:

The Law of Substitution says that…

“Your mind can only hold one thought at a time, positive or negative, you can substitute a positive thought for a negative thought whenever you choose.”

The Law of Habit says that…

“Any thought or acion that you repeat over and over again will eventually become a new habit.”

The Law of Emotion says…

“A stronger emotion will dominate and override a weaker emotion, and whiever emotion you concentrate on grows and becomes stronger.”

The Law of Attraction says that…

“You are a ‘living magnet’ and that you inevitably attract the people and circumstance into your life that harmonize with your dominant thoughts, especially those thought that you emotionalize strongly.”

The Law of Expectations says that…

“Whatever you expect, with confidence, becomes your self-fulfilling prophecy.”

The Law of Correspondence says that…

“Your outer world corresponds to your inner world.”

The Law of Cause and Effect says that…

“For everything you want, there is a price that must be paid.”

Most people seem to forget this law.

The Law of Sowing and Reaping says that…

“You have to put in before you get out. You have to give before you receive.”

This reminds me of a couple of Bible verses.

The Law of Belief says that…

“Whatever you believe, with feeling, becomes your reality.”

The Law of Belief sounds a lot like the Law of Expectations listed above.

The Law of Indirect Effort says that…

“You achieve things with people more indirectly than directly.”

Brian uses the example of someone who wants friends. Instead of trying to get people to like him, he should concentrate on being a friend to people.

The Law of Compensation says that…

“You get our what you put in, and the more you put in, the more you get out.”

Sounds like the Law of Reaping and Sowing.

The Law of Reversability says that…

“You can develop within yourself the values, beliefs, and qualitites you most admire by acting as if you already had them.”

The Law of Probabilities says that…

“There is a probability for everything that happens.”

Duh! I don’t understand the point of this law.

I’m going to teach these laws to my kids.

I have had similar thoughts, just not expressed this way. I would like my significant other to understand and believe in these.

The law of probabilities … perhaps the point is to focus on expectation values. Or perhaps the point is to focus on changing the probabilities.

    JLP,

I agree with your take of the Law of Probabilities. I could go one step further and say that there is a 100% probability for everything that happens.

I think a better Law of Probabilities would be there is a probability that anything can happen. This would be more motivational and would stress the point that you can achieve anything.

Having said that, I haven’t read the book so maybe this is what he really meant.

    Bobby,

Brian uses the Law of Probabilities to explain away the concept of luck, which is a crutch that lots of people use to explain why others are better off while they are not. Taken in that context, the Law of Probabilities makes more sense.

A published university study found that “lucky” people were those that were able recognize and take advantage of opportunities that came along. It’s like two people walking together down the street, one is looking straight ahead, the other looking down. The one looking down is more likely to find the money lying on the sidewalk. He’s the one that people call “lucky.”
