A published university study found that "lucky" people were those that were able recognize and take advantage of opportunities that came along. It's like two people walking together down the street, one is looking straight ahead, the other looking down. The one looking down is more likely to find the money lying on the sidewalk. He's the one that people call "lucky."

Bobby,

Brian uses the Law of Probabilities to explain away the concept of luck, which is a crutch that lots of people use to explain why others are better off while they are not. Taken in that context, the Law of Probabilities makes more sense.

JLP,

I agree with your take of the Law of Probabilities. I could go one step further and say that there is a 100% probability for everything that happens.

I think a better Law of Probabilities would be there is a probability that anything can happen. This would be more motivational and would stress the point that you can achieve anything.

Having said that, I haven't read the book so maybe this is what he really meant.

The law of probabilities ... perhaps the point is to focus on expectation values. Or perhaps the point is to focus on changing the probabilities.

I have had similar thoughts, just not expressed this way. I would like my significant other to understand and believe in these.
