We don't live in a place where we could bury our pet in the backyard, so we called the local pet cemetery. They offered a range of options but nothing really upscale. We bought a plot and their cheapest "box". Our next pet will be cremated there. That's much cheaper. We consider this part of the cost of having a pet since we aren't in a house with a backyard.

Remember the phrase from Robots? "Find a need, fill a need."

Peoples' most outrageous wants have become their needs, and they are willing to pay for them and go into debt for them. Find enough of these fools and you have a successful business.

Pet funeral homes are a logical extension to cemeteries. My friends simply buried their dead animals in the backyard.

When it comes to pets, people have anthromorphized them to a ridiculous degree. Pet food resembles people food. "Ice cream?" Coats for dogs who have their fur shaved off. Animal spas and camps.

I had my 2 elderly dogs pass in the last 1.5 years. I used one to have them cremated. I lived in NC at the time but home is in AL. So wanted to be able to take them home to bury them.

That was money well spent in my opinion. If i could not have found that service I would have been at a loss...not wanting to bury them there nor would ever consider letting the vet "dispose" of them.

I'm pretty sure my pet would rather I spend that money on good food and treats while she is alive.

I guess it is just an untapped market that someone is trying - a business idea. You cannot blame people for trying to identify a niche market and going for it. I expect that some people really appreciate the service that they provide as well. It may seem like they are taking advantage of peoples grief but maybe they are somehow helping them to come to terms with their loss. Just one perspective but personally I would be very happy burying my pets in the garden.

People pay big bucks for their pets. I recently heard on Jim Cramer's Mad Money that he considers the pet business (everything from food to fluff) to be recession proof. He said in the past people have continued to spend on their pets even when the economy turns downward.

I agree. But I also think that a funeral home for humans is a utter waste. I wish to be disposed of in the most cost-effective way possible.

We are one economic depression away from looking at fluffy/fido as a pet versus a meal. Crazy is an understatement.

I suppose it makes sense for those to whom pets are child substitutes. As for us, we put our dead birds in a shoebox and buried them under cement blocks (to discourage digging) out back.
