A Quick Look at the Best and Worst Sectors in 2008 (so far)
By JLP | June 1, 2008
Below are the total returns for the ten sectors that make up the Dow Jones Total Market Index.
By far the best performing sector so far this year is the Basic Materials Index, which is up nearly 12% in the first five months of this year.
Not surprisingly, the worst performing sector so far this year has been the Financials Index, which is down nearly 12%.
So far, 2008 is turning out to be a bummer with 7 out of 10 sectors in the negative. One of the three sectors that is positive is just barely clinging to a .12% return.

My “best sector” this year has been, ahem, “no sector”, i.e., my dull and boring CDs. My wife laughed at me when I took half off the table some years back and started laddering CDs. She’s not laughing now. She thinks I’m a financial guru.
That’s OK, keep up the illusion, I always say.
Yours,
