Home Sweet Home

By JLP | September 1, 2008

Evacuating is a pain in the rear:

1. First you have to pick up all the loose stuff around the yard and put them in the garage.

2. Then you have to board up the large windows of your house.

3. Then you have to load up the car with only your most precious valuables.

4. Then you have to go around and put up anything else that you consider valuable that you don’t want to get damaged should the house flood.

5. Then you have to leave your house, climb into the car with your wife, kids, dog, and precious valuables and head a couple of miles out of town where you then meet up with thousands of other evacuees and then sit in traffic.

It sucks!

But,…

It’s better than losing everything!

Our area of Texas was spared any effects of Hurrican Gustav. For that, I’m very thankful. We left town on Saturday night and drove over to the Northwest side of Houston to stay with my wife’s sister and her family. The drive over wasn’t too bad except that it took us about 6 hours to drive what normally takes about two hours. At one point we went 13 miles in two hours (my wife said at one point we actually only went 3 miles but I wasn’t keeping track then).

Anyway, we made it back home tonight. It’s nice to be home but now I have to spend a day just putting the house back in order. But, I may want to wait until I find out for sure where Ike is heading…

Yech, that sounds awful, glad to hear the lack of news. Gustav looked like it could have been really bad.

You should take both cars. I think in Memphis we got 40,000 evacuees from New Orleans. Usually that’s only about 10,000 cars. But this time it seemed like 20,000 cars. I think they learned from Katrina. BTW, they were packed to the gills with pictures and everything else. Don’t blame them.

Glad you all are all right, and that your home wasn’t effected. (or is it affected-never get that right)

Amen to that! Your scenario was exactly the same as ours! Except, we did leave a little earlier on Saturday and therefore were spared most of the evacuation traffic. We had to use GPS to find alternative routes home, though, to avoid the gridlock on Hwy 105. We are also SO GLAD to be home!!!
