Status Update
By JLP | September 14, 2008
Well, we ended up evacuating about 40 miles north of our house. The hurricane knocked out power at our evacuation point so we left there last night and went further north to the Jacksonville, TX area.
One of my neighbors who stayed behind called me to tell me that our house recieved very minor damage but that our area is expected to be without power for 3 to 4 weeks. So, I’m not sure what we’re going to do. We can’t stay away for too long because my wife will be needed back at the plant as she is an integral part to the start-up process. I’ll keep you updated.
Oh, one other thing…
This evacuation was a DREAM compared to Rita. Thank God for that!
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.

Glad to hear you are alright . I was wondering. My daughter, who lives in Webster (SE hoution area) happened to be in the Atlanta area for work this week. (where we live) Fate was kind as her nervious Mother was glad to have her “at home .” Her return flight has been resecheduled twice and she is anxious to get back and discover how her vehicle and apartment fared. Her nearby friends who also evacuated do not know either as they are keeping Webster residents out of their evacuation area the last we heard.

Glad you are safe. Been wondering and praying for you.
Just make sure your kids aren’t late for school Monday morning!
Can’t wait until you get back into blogging regularly again.

3-4 weeks?! Wow. Best wishes on a faster recovery than that.

Best wishes to you guys. Great news that your house is OK. Hopefully the 3-4 weeks is just a WAG and it’ll be much much sooner.

Wow, 3-4 weeks in amazing. Hopefully it turns out to be much faster than that. Do you have a generator of any sort? Even a small one would be great. Then again, without power, will gas pumps work? It’s amazing how dependent we are on electricity.

Glad you were able to get out. There are tons of people in Dallas up from Houston, including some of our family.
Hope you’re able to find some place to stay while they get things back up and running. Hopefully 3-4 weeks is a VERY conservative estimate.

Thanks to my calculated decision, i stayed. the wind knocked the windows the whole night, keeping me awake, and in the early morning i saw a street cat lurching at the upper beam of the fence between my house and my neighbor’s, its tail grabbing the top of the fence, brilliant act of an animal.
most of my neighbors’ fences facing the west have been torn apart.
I’m among the 5% of the fortunate residents who still have electricity:) btw, i’m with Reliant rather than CenterPoint.
Local HEB and Warmart see customers line up outside of the store, along with cops…
Price tags are empty in most local gas stations.
I filled up my tank on Wednesday night as before making any wind speed calculation. IKE in its hurricane form spans three (3) degrees in latitude, which formed the basis of my risk estimate.

We had couple of fences down and two neighbours had roof damage. Glad you are safe. Stay safe and god bless.

Wow 3-4 weeks? Nuts. Best of luck…

Glad to hear you’re all safe and sound. Hopefully you’ll be home sooner rather than later.

I am hopeful that the 3-4 week timeline is worst case. I know when Iowa was flooded earlier this year, people came from other states to help out. Let us pray for the same generosity and ‘extra hands’ in Houston / Galveston to shorten up that timeline so life can get back to normal.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the status of properties around Youpon St. in Galveston? I have family (who evacuated) with a home in that area.
Thanks! Beth

Glad to hear you’re doing well… hopefully the power will return sooner than expected…

Glad to hear that the damage to your home is minor – hopefully getting the power back up won’t take that long. Do you keep a generator at home for emergencies such as this?
Good luck, our thoughts go out to you and people impacted by this storm.

Glad to know you are safe. Good luck and God bless.

I think the 4-week estimate is for the last person out in No Man’s Land between Sabine Pass and Pt. Arthur. HOWEVER, we’re out of there, too, even though we stayed during the actual storm. (It was bad, by the way.) 1/3 of Lumberton already has power back (though we are in the OTHER 2/3s), so I think that they are getting it up a lot more quickly than originally anticipated.
What about you/your wife’s jobs? Will they require you to come back, or do you have the freedom to stay out as long as you need to?
Glad that you and your family is safe. God bless,
Lindsay

I am heading back to Houston tomorrow. My roommate said our power came back on tonight. So, I guess it’s not so bad. I talked to some people who live in Winnie — and it is a heartbreaking story that directions. Glad your house is ok!
