After I put the portfolio together a reader mentioned that iShares had an exchange-traded commodities fund.  Exchange-traded notes differ from Exchange-traded funds in that they are essentially debt instruments and are backed by the issuing firm.  As we&#039;ve seen this year, banks (big banks) can go under.</description>
