Snow in Southeast Texas!

By JLP | December 11, 2008

Damn global warming is making everything cold!

Seriously, we got 3 to 5 inches of snow last night. That hasn’t happened since 1986 and I’m not sure they got that much then. I was in Kansas back in those days so I have no idea.

Anyway, I when I went to bed last night at about 11:30, it was sleeting outside. I then woke up at around 3 am and decided to take a peak outside to see if the ice was sticking. Low and behold, there was 3 to 4 inches of snow on the ground. It wasn’t sticking to the streets, driveways, and sidewalks, but it was sticking to everything else.

I went and got my wife and kids up and told them that they needed to come take a look. They were amazed. I know, some of you see snow all the time. We don’t down here in the deep south (we’re 40 miles from the Gulf of Mexico). For us it was a treat. The really cool thing is that it is supposed to warm up into the 50s so the snow will mostly be gone today.

The funny thing is that these measly 4 inches of snow caused my paper delivery person to take the freakin’ day off! What a wimp!

Haven’t you heard . . . since there has been no warming in about a decade the environMENTALists changed the topic to ‘climate change’ so that anything that happens can be blamed on the evils of humanity. All of humanity must be punished based on weak links and heart throb stories.

Didn’t you know everything shuts down when it snows in the south? And good luck finding any bread or milk at the grocery stores. :)

Wow, over just southwest of Houston I only got about a dusting of snow, nothing on the grass really. I wish we would have had more but everything from the east side of Houston over was a mess with traffic delays, hours long delays they said, most bridges were shut down.

They really don’t know what to do with this stuff down here.

Enjoy it while it lasts, we should have 70 degree weather this weekend to help out.

As a atmospheric scientist, I am extremely tired of waging this debate with ignorant people.

I will merely say that climate is NOT equal to weather.

Seriously, if I ever told an electrician they were wrong about the need for grouding the house you would be completely justified to call me a lunatic. Please give my profession the same respect.

    Eden,

None of us mean any disrespect to your profession. It’s just that we don’t seem to be getting any straight answers. Al Gore, spokesman for global warming, refuses to debate on the topic. What’s the average American supposed to think? Should we just accept what Al says without debate? I think not.

Wimp indeed! I delivered papers in MT with 4 feet of snow, in -40 F weather between age 8 and 13 :)

Hey, we need that snow here in Utah for our ski areas! It is below average here at the moment, although the forecast is for big storms this weekend. Skiers keep your fingers crossed.

For Eden above: We all know that climate and weather are not the same thing. However, proponents of the AGW theory love to breathlessly report every heat wave, hurricane, or iceberg calving as proof that the end is near. Given that, it is only natural for us that are skeptical to mock them with weather events that disprove their contention.

Should see the snow hell we got in Montreal yesterday. It was a freaking MESS trying to get out for some food (to buy and cook).

I’d love to just have a dusting of snow like that. I can’t wait to move to Texas!

A friend of mine from the Midwest (now transplanted to the Pacific Northwest)just laughs at us when we get the rare snow. According to him, we take a look at one inch on the ground and either life shuts down while we wait for it all to go away, or we get into our cars and, having never driven in snow, go very, very fast!

I’m glad you enjoyed the snow. I sent it down to you from Chicago. It really was very unusual for you all in the south. I lived in the Dallas area for several years, where they do get snow every other year or so. I think it’s a good sign that you had snow that close to the Gulf. Also, there is great legend of snow falling in the 4th century A.D. in Rome on August 5, as a sign to a Roman patrician and his wife, that they were to donate their possessions for the construction of a basilica in honor of the blessed Mother of God, which is is one of the four great basilicas of Rome today, St. Mary Major.

See this Catholic encyclopedia article for more on the miracle of “Our Lady of the Snows”:

But the media and politicians told me so! ;)
