I'm glad you enjoyed the snow. I sent it down to you from Chicago. It really was very unusual for you all in the south. I lived in the Dallas area for several years, where they do get snow every other year or so. I think it's a good sign that you had snow that close to the Gulf. Also, there is great legend of snow falling in the 4th century A.D. in Rome on August 5, as a sign to a Roman patrician and his wife, that they were to donate their possessions for the construction of a basilica in honor of the blessed Mother of God, which is is one of the four great basilicas of Rome today, St. Mary Major.

See this Catholic encyclopedia article for more on the miracle of "Our Lady of the Snows":

A friend of mine from the Midwest (now transplanted to the Pacific Northwest)just laughs at us when we get the rare snow. According to him, we take a look at one inch on the ground and either life shuts down while we wait for it all to go away, or we get into our cars and, having never driven in snow, go very, very fast!

Should see the <a href="http://fabulouslybrokeinthecity.blogspot.com/2008/12/not-venturing-out-today-unless-its-for.html" rel="nofollow">snow hell we got in Montreal yesterday</a>. It was a freaking MESS trying to get out for some food (to buy and cook).

I'd love to just have a dusting of snow like that. I can't wait to move to Texas!

Hey, we need that snow here in Utah for our ski areas! It is below average here at the moment, although the forecast is for big storms this weekend. Skiers keep your fingers crossed.

For Eden above: We all know that climate and weather are not the same thing. However, proponents of the AGW theory love to breathlessly report every heat wave, hurricane, or iceberg calving as proof that the end is near. Given that, it is only natural for us that are skeptical to mock them with weather events that disprove their contention.

Eden,

None of us mean any disrespect to your profession. It's just that we don't seem to be getting any straight answers. Al Gore, spokesman for global warming, refuses to debate on the topic. What's the average American supposed to think? Should we just accept what Al says without debate? I think not.

As a atmospheric scientist, I am extremely tired of waging this debate with ignorant people.

I will merely say that climate is NOT equal to weather.

Seriously, if I ever told an electrician they were wrong about the need for grouding the house you would be completely justified to call me a lunatic. Please give my profession the same respect.
